The women’s basketball team has a promising start to their conference games and the players say they are confident about what the rest of the season will bring.
The team is undefeated this semester and is 7-1 in conference play. They lost to Mount Mercy last semester but played them again on Monday, defeating them 65-61.
The Vikings are now two games ahead of Mount Mercy in the race for the conference championship.
Amy Vos, junior forward, said, “It was our biggest game of the season.”
Jenn Jorgensen, junior forward, said the first time they played, the team tried to take away Mount Mercy’s leading scorers and they succeeded, however, the rest of the team stepped up and contributed for the win.
This time, Jorgensen said they changed their strategy and it paid off with a victory.
“I feel like at this point we have enough talent, we really shouldn’t lose another conference game,” Vos said.
The women’s team will play everyone in the conference twice and the game against Mount Mercy marked the start of the second round of games. They will play conference games until the middle of February.
The leading scorer for the team this season is Jorgensen, averaging 23 points per game, while grabbing 10 rebounds a game.
Jorgensen lives at the free throw line, attempting 200 free throws on the season, nearly half of the team’s attempts.
Jorgensen is followed by Morgan Hamner, senior center, who averages 12 points per game, and Voss, averages just under 11 points per game while grabbing five rebounds a game.
Kristin Rasmussen, senior guard, leads the team in assists per game with four and is also ranked nationally with 87 assists.
The team played a tournament in Chicago over winter break, where they went 1-1, beating the No. 6 team but losing to a team they shouldn’t have, Jorgensen said.
The team is hoping to win the conference, Vos and Jorgensen said, and their conference is guaranteed to have two teams at nationals in Sioux City.
“Worst case scenario, we would like to be in at least the top two,” Jorgensen said.
This season is a lot better than last season, Vos said. The team is just hoping to finish out the season and make it to nationals, Vos and Jorgensen said.
The Vikings have showed their depth this season, having 10 players averaging double figures for minutes played this season.
The Vikings have outscored their opponents by over a hundred points in the first half of ball games, and holds teams to an average of 32 points in the second half.
