The Vikings (1-4) fell 36-24 to Iowa Wesleyan in Mount Pleasant last Saturday after taking an early 3-0 lead and going into halftime tied 10-10.
With five games under their belt the Vikings are at the midway point in the season. Though still prone to rookie mistakes the young Vikings are starting to show signs of maturity and leadership on the field.
Head Coach Mike Woodley said, "We are inching ahead with our maturity. Some of the young guys are starting to step up into leadership roles."
One place where that's evident is along the offensive line. Woodley said the coaches challenged the offensive line last Saturday and they answered the call playing their best game of the season.
The team as a whole has also met the challenge of keeping up team morale while they are in the midst of four competitive losses to tough competition.
Freshman receiver Lester Moffett said, "We always keep our heads up through wins and losses, we never give up."
Woodley said the team needs to minimize mistakes and take care of the little things in order to get over the hump.
The Vikings have a great chance to do just this Saturday as they host Kentucky Wesleyan for Homecoming at 2:00 p.m.
Freshman receiver/running back Jay Medellin said, "I'm really excited to play at home in front of our fans. We are focused on the task at hand and are ready to showcase how much we've improved since our last home game."
The Vikings will be returning to Williams Stadium for the first time since their season opening 20-17 win over Briar Cliff. The Vikings have hosted one home game since then, a 48-37 loss to Midland Lutheran, which was played at Johnston High School Stadium as a result of bad weather.
Kentucky Wesleyan will be similar to Iowa Wesleyan in that they both feature powerful offenses led by talented upperclassmen. Woodley said Kentucky Wesleyan and the Vikings are playing a home and home series which will result in the Vikings traveling to Owensboro next year.
