As Homecoming week draws to a close with tomorrow's Homecoming game and dance capping the festivities, one thing has been made clear, underage and excessive drinking will not be tolerated.

We have all undoubtedly seen the daily mass emails emphasizing responsible decisions with regard to alcohol this week.

Tuesday and Wednesday's alcohol awareness activities, held in the student center, gave a sober reminder about the dangers of alcohol abuse.

From Jay Prescott, vice president of student affairs, to members of the Viking Council, student life, and the psychology club, along with employee and family resources, a campus wide effort has been made to educate and inform students about responsible alcohol use.

The Grand Views would like to join in encouraging students to celebrate Homecoming responsibly with regard to alcohol.

By no means is this new information we students have received this week.

Binge drinking on college campuses across America is a major issue according to countless studies.

We've all seen the drunken driving public service announcement ad, "Over the Limit-- Under Arrest," with drivers swerving out of control in vehicles full of various types of drinks.

Most, if not all of us have been touched or know someone who has been touched by tragedy involving alcohol. It's something we as young adults deal with far too often.

Some students may question the school's decision to restrict who can and cannot ride the shuttle buses or enter the dance, based on the appearance of being intoxicated. The use of police officers at the entrance could also ruffle some feathers.

Yes, the majority of us will handle ourselves accordingly and represent Grand View well, but there's always "that guy or girl" who has had too much, and sadly it only takes one to ruin their or someone else's night, or worse yet, life, in the process.

Cheer on the Vikings at the Homecoming game, dance the night away with your fellow Grand View students at the Homecoming dance and enjoy some drinks if you are of age and you choose to, but yours and everyone's safety, do it responsibly.
