Over 60 people attended the Viking Council's annual street painting Sunday, Sept. 28 to help homecoming week start off right.

The event began at 2 p.m. in front of the student Suites and Viking Council provided paint, music and free pop and water to those participating.

Jeff Rost, psychology senior and president of Viking Council, said, "Red, white and black paint was provided, as well as two brushes and one roller for each club."

To prepare for the event, Viking Council members cleaned up the street and painted 26 squares with white paint. Black paint was used for four squares the art club used to paint a giant mural of the new Viking mascot.

17 clubs and organizations and one residential floor participated in this year's street painting. The RA's were chosen as the winners last year and tied for second this year.

Brady Eagle, marketing junior, said, "This year we painted the whole campus and outlined the buildings each of us are in charge of. We also came up with the slogan 'we rock this' for our square."

Dennis Kaven, professor of art and design, outlined the mascot for art club and Cory McElree and Mark Gurwell, graphic design juniors, helped paint it.

McElree said, "It took us a little over an hour to finish painting it. We had fun and it turned out nice, plus we earned "Kaven cash" for our art trip to Chicago for helping out."

The Spanish club painted a square reading "Relaciones sin fronteras" and pictured handprints throughout the square.

Chelsea Maas, Spanish and education sophomore, said, "Relaciones sin fronteras means relations without borders."

"Coralie (Turner, Spanish professor) came up with the idea because there are so many Spanish-speaking countries you cannot just paint a sombrero or something and cover every Spanish-speaking country," she said.

The Viking Council chose Viking Volunteers as this year's winner. They received $100. Diversity Alliance, Campus Crusade and the RA's, tied for second and third. They each received $50.

Rost said, "We didn't stick to a theme this year but the clubs and organizations really took off with it and the street looks great. Overall, I was very impressed by the work done and it seemed like everyone was really enjoying themselves."
