The Vikings had their moments, but could not sustain drives offensively falling 34-13 to Kentucky Wesleyan on homecoming at Williams Stadium.
An announced crowd of 1,827 cheered as junior quarterback Brad Schmit found sophomore receiver Brett Opdahl open in the front of the end zone on third and goal from the 12-yard line with 46 seconds left in the first half. The score brought the Vikings within a touchdown at 14-7, giving them momentum going into the second half.
That momentum was quickly lost on Kentucky Wesleyan's first offensive play of the second half. Sophomore receiver Vincent Lalonde took a reverse handoff and was seemingly bottled up, he reversed field making one Viking defender miss and then raced up the sideline for the 65-yard touchdown pushing Kentucky Wesleyan's lead to 21-7.
The Vikings would fight back scoring on a 41-yard run by Furlow. With 4:27 remaining in the third quarter Furlow burst through a large hole on the left side of the line, racing down the sideline and cutting back to avoid a Kentucky Wesleyan defender for the touchdown. The touchdown brought the Vikings within 11 at 24-13 after missing the extra point.
The score remained 24-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan would tack on a touchdown and field goal making the final 34-13.
The Vikings first touchdown drive was set up on an interception by freshman linebacker Troy Stewart, who made a heads up play after the ball had been tipped in the air. The interception gave the Vikings the ball at the Kentucky Wesleyan 43-yard line. On third and two from the 35-yard line freshman running back Lawrence Furlow broke loose on a halfback draw gaining 25 yards setting up first and goal.
The Vikings next travel to Bolivar, Missouri to take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats Saturday, October 11 at 1:30 p.m.
